FAQs about Lab Water Purification Equipment

Laboratory grade water is categorized by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) into four categories, Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV. For laboratory applications, we focus on Type I, II and III.

Type I – Ultrapure

  • Resistivity of >18.0 MΩ-cm at 25°C
  • Needed for critical lab functions
  • Used for tissue and cell cultures and DNA research
  • Required for ultra-sensitive analytical instruments
  • CONSIDER THE LABSTRONG™ RAPIDS™

Type II – Pure

  • Resistivity of 1-15 MΩ-cm at 25°C
  • Needed for basic lab functions
  • Used for creating buffers and media production, general chemistry and spectrophotometry
  • Can be used as a pretreatment to an ultrapure water system
  • CONSIDER THE LABSTRONG™ CASCADE™ WATER SYSTEM OR FI-STREEM™ STILL

Type III – Primary Grade Water

  • Resistivity >4 MΩ cm at 25°C
  • Needed for non-critical laboratory functions
  • Used for rinsing glassware and autoclaves
  • Can be used as a pretreatment to an ultrapure water system

This depends on the applications being performed in your laboratory. Generally speaking, type I water (ultrapure) is used for critical lab functions, such as tissue and cell cultures or for ultra-sensitive analytical instruments. If you need to pretreat a type I system, either a type II (pure) or a type III (primary grade) will work. Labs that are creating buffers and media production or doing general chemistry and spectrophotometry need type II water.  If you are just rinsing glassware and autoclaves, a type III water will be suitable.

It is recommended not to store your type I (ultrapure) water and only dispense what is needed. Water quality will greatly reduce if stored.

This depends on a few different factors such as your current water system, your feed water and applications being performed in the laboratory.
